SPEAKERS

richard bruno, md, MPH

Dr. Richard Bruno is a primary care physician, board certified in both family medicine and preventive medicine. He works at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Baltimore, MD. He has also served on the boards of the American Academy of Family Physicians, National Physicians Alliance, Physicians for a National Health Program, American Association of Public Health Physicians, MedChi the Maryland state medical society, Hampden Family Center, Sugar Free Kids Maryland, and Friends of the Hampden School #55. He sits on the ethics panel of the Baltimore City Public Schools board of commissioners. One of his main clinical focuses is obesity prevention, including sugary drink interventions at local cornerstones and cooking classes for kids. He and his wife of thirteen years have two children and live in Baltimore City where they love hiking, biking, and cooking together. He attained a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, doctorate of medicine from Oregon Health and Science University, and a master of public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He graduated from the combined Family & Preventive Medicine residency program at MedStar Franklin Square and Johns Hopkins.

Aaron George, DO, FAAFP, FCpp

Dr. Aaron George is the Director of Medical Education and Assistant Program Director for the Meritus Family Medicine Residency Program.  He is a 2012 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and subsequently obtained his Family Medicine Residency training at Duke University Health System.  Dr. George was an Andlinger fellow in health policy with the Center for Public Health in Vienna, Austria where he worked on primary care workforce and academic development.  He recently served on the payment and practice tactic teams for the Family Medicine for America’s Health program, and is a regular contributor as author to Medical Economics.  He is also a clinical Associate Professor at Penn State College of Medicine where he teaches graduate coursework on the history of medicine. He has been awarded the FMEC Emerging Leaders award, the Bristol-Myers Squibb award for excellence in graduate medical education, as well as being named one of the 40 under 40 physicians by the Pennsylvania Medical Society.  He currently serves on the Board of the Family Medicine Education Consortium.  His areas of interest include advancement of community and population health as well as health policy and economics.  He resides in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Laura Simpkins is from Columbus, OH and attended Capital University for her BSN. After undergrad, she moved to Phoenix, AZ and worked at a large, teaching hospital in the Medical/Surgical ICU. Realizing the importance of primacy care, to help keep patients healthy and out of the ICU, she went back to school for Master’s of Nursing- Family Nurse Practitioner at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Laura has worked at a FQHC in Baltimore, MD for the previous 5 years. In Baltimore, Laura provides primary care services to a wide range of patients, with a variety of chronic conditions, who are deeply marginalized and underserved. Laura was honored to be chosen to participate in the 2018-2019 Duke Johnson and Johnson Nurse Leadership Program, a year long fellowship through Duke University. Sexual health, family planning, and HIV are of particular interest to Laura. She also has some great cross-country moving tips, if needed. 

patrick brent smith, mD, MSc, MLS, FAAFp

Dr. Smith is a family medicine/sports medicine trained physician in private practice in Cleveland, MS.  Board certified in family medicine, he also carries a CAQ in sports medicine from the University of Alabama.  Dr. Smith is active in the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians, and currently serves as the Chair for the Mississippi High School Activities Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.  
 

tobie-lynn smith, md, mph, med, faafp

Tobie Smith, MD, MPH, MEd, FAAFP, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Family Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine where she is the Course Director for Ambulatory Care, Acting Course Director for the Family Medicine Clerkship and Faculty Advisor for the Student run HOYA Clinic, and Street Medicine Interest group. Dr. Smith has served as Medical Director of Health Care for the Homeless in Baltimore County, MD, while also a faculty member at MedStar Franklin Square Family Medicine Residency Program She is a graduate of University of Texas at Austin (BA, MEd Kinesiology), Stony Brook School of Medicine (MD), and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (MPH). She completed her residency in Family Medicine at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa in San Antonio, TX and a Fellowship in Community Health Leadership Development at Georgetown University in partnership with Unity Health Care. She also serves as a Physicians for Human Rights Asylum Network Provider. Dr Smith currently chairs the Work Group on Primary Care and Public Health Integration of the American Academy of Family Physician’s Commission on Health of the Public and Science. As a former member of USA Swimming National Team she now serves on the Board of Directors for the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Her interests include underserved care, public health and primary care integration, homeless health care, gun violence prevention, and health equity.

leslie tabb, msn, aprn, fnp-bc

Leslie is a Family Nurse Practitioner in Cleveland, MS. She attended Mississippi State University and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. After graduating with her master’s degree in nursing from Delta State University in 1999, she began her career as a family nurse practitioner at Family Medical Clinic in Cleveland where she still practices today. Her patient population is diverse  as it consists of newborn to elderly and spans all economic backgrounds. Serving the underprivileged of the Mississippi Delta for twenty years has been both challenging and rewarding. She was named Delta Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40 and Top 50 under 50. She has also been awarded Cleveland’s favorite Nurse Practitioner several times. She is married with two teenage children.
